The $199 Netbook, The Gateway LT2712u Netbook Review

May 30, 2011 Netbooks 4 Comments

For a brief time at Best Buy, the Gateway LT2712U was on sale for only $199. This was by far the best deal for your money, and the cheapest netbook out there.   To get a netbook, that is this great, for such a cheap price was a fabulous deal.  This is similar to the Acer netbook, mainly because Acer owns Gateway.  However, the Smooth finish, the large keys, and the light weight of this netbook is an added plus.  It is similar to most netbooks with the Intel Atom N455 processor.  Designed for new-generation mobile devices and delivering fine performance while saving energy for longer battery life, the Intel® Atom™ Processor N4501 is a revolution in chip architecture. Finally, the power you’ve always wished a netbook could deliver is in your hands. It also comes with 1 GB of DDR3 RAM, and a fast 160GB hard drive.  The Gateway LT2712 has the Intel  Graphics Media Accelerator 3100 series, which adds response-boosting dynamic video memory. It improves graphics performance while saving power.

There are two negative aspects that do need to be addressed, the battery is only a 3 cell battery which means you get about 4 hours of battery life.  The other problem is that it is the 1GB of RAM is not upgradeable without a lot of effort. This is due to the fact that you have to remove the keyboard instead of having simple access in the back, like most netbooks. If you are interested in the process of upgrading the RAM, goto Upgrading RAM However, even with that in mind, you are still getting  a great deal for the money you are spending.

Please correct the review. The RAM is upgradeable, it’s just not EASILY upgradeable. Follow the instructions here: http://blog.whyztech.com/2011/01/upgraded-gateway-lt25-netbook-ram/
It’s the same set up. I’ve just done it with mine.

I definitely agree with this reviewer…BEST netbook for the money! This netbook is even better than my Asus EEE PC 1005HAB and that has 2GB RAM and runs Windows XP! The Gateway netbook has 1GB RAM and runs pretty fast. I use this with my Virgin Mobile Mifi for internet access and it’s blazing fast!

I found a battery upgrade on Google, a 6 cell battery, which would give it more battery life. I think what comes with it is a 3 cell battery.
